Liverpool FC signs a Spanish player for the first team. Wellity Lucky Omoruyi, 17 years old, has been chosen to step up from the U18 squad to the first team led by Jürgen Klopp.

Another Spanish player is chosen by Klopp
Wellity Lucky (12/01/2006) is a football player born in Zaragoza, Spain. He joined the English youth academy when he was under 13 and has since moved up through the ranks. Last season, at just 16, he debuted at U18 level. So far, he has played a total of 12 games, four of which have come in this 2022/23 season.
He has also been called up to the England U15 and U16 National Teams before being called up to play for Spain’s U17 National Team. Until now, he has played as a centre-back under Marc Bridge-Wilkinson’s command—the coach who gave him his debut—but he can also play as a right-back.
Next season, Wellity will meet his new teammates in the Liverpool FC first team. He will have to work hard to find a place among world-class players such as Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold, among others.
A similar case
A similar case can be noticed with Spanish midfielder Stefan Bajcetic (22/10/2004). The Galician player came through the youth ranks at Celta de Vigo before joining Liverpool CF in 2020. After his rising progress in Liverpool’s U21 youth team, he managed to be called up to the first team for some games at the end of the 2021/22 season.
Finally, it has been this 2022/23 season when he succeeded in making the definitive leap to the team coached by Jürgen Klopp. He has now made a sum of 26 appearances, scoring one goal and providing one assist. Thanks to his outstanding performances, the player was rewarded with a contract extension until 2027.
Conclusions
The Liverpool U18 team is currently having a great season—fifth place—and Wellity has been crucial in the games he has been able to play in. It is therefore understandable that Klopp has picked him to be part of his team next season.
Who knows if Klopp will decide to make changes at the back and give him the opportunity he needs to take off in his career because of the crisis that the Reds are going through this season. It already happened with Stefan Bajcetic and, why not, something similar may occur with the young player from Zaragoza.
